UC San Diego Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery - Diversity in Otolaryngology Visiting Clerkship Scholarship

The Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery at the University of California San Diego is excited to announce its Diversity in Otolaryngology Visiting Clerkship Scholarship, which provides support for medical students underrepresented in medicine (URiM) and/or from economically disadvantaged backgrounds to participate in a visiting clerkship in our department.  In accordance with the UC San Diego Office of Graduate Medical Education, we are committed to the recruitment and retention of residents from diverse backgrounds and believe that diversity in our field not only enriches the experiences of all of our faculty and trainees, but also offers unique benefits in the care we provide to our diverse patient population. 

The goals of this program are to:

  • Provide exposure to the field of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery for medical trainees URiM and/or from disadvantaged backgrounds
  • Promote the recruitment and retention of trainees underrepresented in Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery and increase diversity in our field
  • Provide longitudinal career development and mentorship opportunities from UCSD Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery faculty and residents

Program Details

  • This award will be funded to a limited number of full time fourth-year medical students applying to Otolaryngology residency and planning to complete a visiting clerkship at UC San Diego from July to November of the current residency interview cycle. Applicants must be U.S. medical students in good standing with their current institutions
  • Scholarships of up to $2,500 will be provided to each recipient of this award after completion of their away rotation to help reimburse the expenses of an away rotation (i.e. travel, housing, transportation, daily allowance of meals)

Program Requirements/ criteria for applicants include:

  • Eligible applicants must identify with groups that have been disadvantaged, underrepresented, or inadequately supported in medical training or those experiencing financial hardship. Minority racial and ethnic backgrounds underrepresented in medicine include Hispanic/Latino, Black/African American, Native American, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander.
  • Be a current fourth-year medical student in good standing accepted for a visiting clerkship in Otolaryngology at UC San Diego School of Medicine (surg 433/435) and applying for Otolaryngology residency in the current match year
  • Applicants are restricted to only receiving this scholarship for one rotation at UCSD

Application process and deadlines

  • Applicants should apply for one of the UC San Diego School of Medicine Otolaryngology rotations (surg 433/435) via AAMC Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VLSO) application service
  • Once accepted for a visiting Otolaryngology clerkship at UCSD, applicants should email the following supporting documents to Diversityinotolaryngology@gmail.com
    • Proof of acceptance to UCSD Otolaryngology clerkship
    • Current curriculum vitae (CV)
    • One letter of recommendation
    • Personal statement describing a previous experience with diversity and/or financial hardship in addition to your interest for pursing a visiting rotation at UCSD (approx. 500 words)
  • Applications will be reviewed individually in the order received and applicants will be notified of acceptance on a rolling basis. Applicants are encouraged to apply as soon as they are accepted for a UCSD Otolaryngology clerkship.
  • Deadline for application and supporting documents is August 30, 2023
