San Diego
San Diego Bay

Metropolitan San Diego is a community of incomparable beauty that covers 4,261 square miles along the Pacific Ocean between San Clemente to the north and the Mexican border to the south. It is the second largest population center in California, with a population of 2.14 million.

The economy of San Diego is based, in order, on manufacturing high technology, agriculture, fishing, tourism, and the military. There are nearly 1,000 diversified manufacturers in the county, most prominently in the field of aerospace, electronics, oceanography, marine biology, biotechnology, and nuclear energy. Approximately one-fourth of San Diego County is farmland, and it ranks among the leading counties in the nation in value of agricultural products. The natural harbor of San Diego is the base of the pacific coast tuna fishing fleet, and San Diego is among the national leaders in seafood production.

The climate in San Diego is considered by many to be the most moderate and pleasant in the United States. Temperature averages range from 55 degrees in January to 73 degrees in August, relative humidity ranges from 47 percent to 72 Tip of Point Lomapercent, and total rainfall averages approximately ten inches annually. The sun shines almost every day, and an average of 265 days per year are both clear and sunny. Ocean swimming is available at many beaches; and aquatic sports, such as surfing, water skiing, skin diving, sail and power boating, and salt and freshwater sport fishing can be pursued throughout the year. Outdoor tennis is a popular year-round sport, and golf is played throughout the year on over twenty-five major golf courses. Skiing, mountain climbing, and hunting are available only a few hours' drive from the city.

San Diego has numerous museums and art galleries, a world-famous zoo, and 173 developed parks and recreation centers. Educational and cultural activities are provided by four universities, by civic agencies such as the San Diego Symphony, the National Shakespeare Festival, and the Civic Theatre, and by regular visits from drama, ballet, and music groups. The adjacent Mexican state of Baja California offers unusual and interesting recreational and cultural opportunities.

Geographic and climatic desirability have been responsible for progressive growth of San Diego County over the past fifteen years, and the city of San Diego has become a focal point for health services and facilities for its 2.14 million residents. There are twenty-eight hospitals containing 4,000 acute, short-term beds, and sixty-one nursing care facilities serving the area. In addition, San Diego has become a center of biomedical research as a result of the development of the University of California, San Diego; the Salk Institute; the Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation; and numerous biotechnology firms.
