The primary objective of the residency training program of the Division of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery is to train specialists with expertise in all aspects of head and neck medicine and surgery. Clinically based, the program offers experiences in inpatient and outpatient care with increasing responsibility as medical and surgical skills are acquired. Throughout the training, interdisciplinary experiences are stressed so that the resident becomes well-versed in modern concepts of medicine, surgery, radiobiology, and pathology.
While emphasizing the acquisition of clinical skills, the residency program provides ample opportunity for the resident to learn and develop administrative, teaching, and research skills.
Learning is reinforced through careful supervision of all clinical work, comprehensive clinically integrated didactic seminars, clinicopathological conferences and the annual in-service training program sponsored by the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.
The graduates of this program are expected to be fully trained and equipped ito become board certified in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. Residents actively participate in planning their specific training needs. Evaluation of the program, its trainees, and faculty secures the highest divisional priority. A major goal of the program is to utilize multiple levels of evaluation and feedback to teach the resident a process of continuing self-assessment. Through this process the resident should develop an ongoing ability to weigh critically the relative merits of contemporary head and neck practices.
The UCSD Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery residency is a six/seven-year program: one year of surgical internship and five years of residency. Included is 1 to 2 years of funded research training designed to meet each resident's own interests. Applicants come from medical schools throughout the country and the admission process is highly selective. The program offers two housestaff positions each year. This residency program participates in the Otolaryngology and National Resident Matching Program and submits its list of selected applicants in accordance with the NRMP deadline.
In addition to formal postgraduate otolaryngology-head and neck surgery training, the Division of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery teaches the following UCSD School of Medicine courses:
Head and neck regional anatomy and histology Surgery core curriculum Preceptorship in otology Subinternship in otolaryngology Auditory and vestibular pathophysiology Olfactory, gustatory and laryngeal physiology Neurobiology of mammalian audition
As part of the surgical service, the Division of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery actively participates in student teaching during their surgery core rotation, with the students required to attend rounds, provide history and physical examinations and assist in patient care in the wards, clinic, and operating room. This close relationship with undergraduate teaching and with the other divisions of surgery maintains a broad continuing educational experience for all members of our division. In addition to these formal teaching roles, the division participates in the training of audiologists, speech pathologists, pediatric, family practice, allergy, radiology, and internal medicine residents. The division also participates in graduate school training by offering ongoing research programs and advisors for the M.D.-Ph.D. programs.
