The otolaryngology residency programs at UCSD and the Balboa Naval Medical Center hold a cooperative journal club from October through June. The two programs alternate the responsibility of choosing a topic and selecting 4 to 5 articles from the literature for all residents and faculty to read and discuss at the monthly meetings. Journal clubs are usually held at a local restaurant. The meetings are sponsored by pharmaceutical and equipment sales representatives. Dinner is provided for all who attend.
Journal club is typically held on the third Thursday of the month from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Articles are distributed 1 to 2 weeks prior to the meeting. The discussion format varies from month to month, but generally one or two residents are responsible for presenting each article to the group.
