Dr. Tsien’s research has shown that a green fluorescent protein from the jellyfish Aequorea victoria can be introduced into a living cell, making it possible to monitor the cell’s biochemical processes visually. Dr. Nguyen has been working on utilizing that protein to mark the delineation between cancer cells and normal cells, so that cancer surgery can become a more precise art.
